Moving a double-wide mobile home in Lafayette

Request my free quote

A double-wide moves as two separate loads and gets put back together at the new lot, so it costs about twice as much as a single-wide. This Old House puts a full-service double-wide move, with transport and setup, at about $11,500 on average, against about $6,500 for a single-wide (This Old House, 2026 mobile home moving cost guide).

Moving a double-wide 50 or 100 miles

This Old House says many companies charge a flat rate for moves within 50 to 100 miles and price longer moves by the mile, usually $5 to $15 a mile. Ryecroft prices the truck per mile for each section, so a double-wide pays the mileage twice. Most moves within Lafayette Parish are well under 50 miles. A move to north Louisiana or out of state is where per-mile pricing starts to matter.

How the two halves travel

The crew splits the home along the marriage line and each half rides on its own truck as a separate oversize load. Ryecroft notes that each section needs its own escorts and permits, which is why almost every line on the quote doubles (Ryecroft Freight mobile home transport guide).

Louisiana rules that apply

Escorts depend on width

Louisiana DOTD requires a private escort vehicle for loads over 12 feet wide and up to 16 feet, and State Police escorts for anything wider than 16 feet. Eaves up to six inches on each side don't count toward the width (Louisiana DOTD, Regulations for Trucks, Vehicles and Loads (2026)). HomeGuide puts double-wides at 24 to 28 feet across (HomeGuide, mobile home releveling costs), so each half is roughly 12 to 14 feet wide, right around the point where Louisiana starts requiring an escort. Ask the mover how wide your sections measure with the eaves and how many escorts they've priced in.

The trip permit

DOTD's mobile home permit costs $10 per trip and covers one trip of up to 72 consecutive hours, with no extensions (Louisiana DOTD, Regulations for Trucks, Vehicles and Loads (2026)). Ask whether the quote includes a permit for each section.

Wind and weather

DOTD names mobile homes in wind as an example of a permitted load that shouldn't move in conditions that create a hazard (Louisiana DOTD, Regulations for Trucks, Vehicles and Loads (2026)). Leave room in your schedule for a weather delay.

Setting the halves back up

At the new lot, an installer sets both halves on blocks, levels them, joins them and seals the marriage line, then anchors the home and reconnects utilities. Louisiana licenses installers and transporters separately and sets anchoring rules for its hurricane wind zones (Louisiana manufactured home installation and transportation law (R.S. 51:912.21 and following)). The permits page covers licensing, tie-downs and the Lafayette Parish placement permit.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Does the price cover both sections, including permits and escorts for each?
  • Who joins the halves and seals the marriage line, and is that in this quote or a separate one?
  • Who disconnects and reconnects water, sewer, gas and electric?
  • What's the Louisiana license number for the transporter and the installer?
  • What insurance covers the home while it's on the road?

Quick answers

How much does it cost to move a double-wide in Louisiana?

National averages are the best guide. This Old House puts a full-service double-wide move at about $11,500 nationally, and transport alone for any size home at $1,000 to $5,000. Distance, escorts and setup work move the price the most.

Does a double-wide need an escort in Louisiana?

Often. Louisiana DOTD requires a private escort for loads over 12 feet wide and up to 16 feet, not counting up to six inches of eaves on each side. Double-wide halves are roughly 12 to 14 feet wide, so many of them cross that line. Ask the mover for the measured width.

How long is a Louisiana mobile home moving permit good for?

The DOTD mobile home permit costs $10 per trip and covers one trip of up to 72 consecutive hours, with no extensions.
